Cotter seniors round out season

Cotter's Jeff Czapkewski releases the disk with an audible grunt of force. His goal for the season is 145 feet; 14 feet farther than his personal best. If he makes his goal, he is confident he can make it to state. (Photo by Liz Jacobs/Winona360)

With a bang, the gun fired and five girls took off, sprinting around the rubber track at the Rushford-Peterson football stadium. Their arms swung, batons in hand, ready to pass off to their teammate; the first track meet of the season was underway.

For five featured seniors on the Cotter High School track and field team—Jeff Czapkewski, Alex Lubahn, Greg Gernes, Eric Mueller and Nikki Beyer—every meet brings them closer to their last chance at the 2011 Minnesota State Track and Field meet, which takes place on June 10 and 11 at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., and to the end of their high school sports careers.

“Every meet is a last time of something,” said assistant coach Mike Brown. “This is your last, first meet; this is your last, second meet; and eventually it is going to be your last, last meet; so I think [seniors] put a lot more effort into it.”

Comments

 Alex "Lunbahn's" real name

Alex "Lunbahn's" real name is Alex L-U-B-A-H-N. Also, there are more than 5 seniors on Cotter's Track and Field team. Might want to double-check your work before you post it.

Corrections

**Winona360 regrets the spelling error and has corrected the matter. The story also reflects these are featured seniors--not a story of all Cotter High School seniors in track.
