According to many downtown business owners and community members, the medians on Main Street in Winona, Minn., have seen their better days, but on Saturday, June 11 they got a much needed face-lift.
“What do you do when company’s coming to your house?” Della Schmidt asked when beginning to brainstorm about rejuvenating downtown Winona for this summer’s tourist season.
Schmidt, Winona Area Chamber of Commerce president, sought out the help of the Winona Master Gardeners and the City of Winona to make a visual face-lift of the downtown area possible.
“I live in downtown and it’s nice to have something looking good,” said Carlos Espinosa, assistant city planner, about the project. “It’s a combination of personal and professional interest; it’s a good compliment actually.”
Master Gardener Shirley Oberton and WSU Community Liaison and inactive Master Gardener Vicki Englich made up the rest of the committee assigned to work on this project.

“I think it’s always a good thing for people to come together on a project that will benefit the common good,” said Englich.
Businesses such as Wells Fargo and McDonald’s that are located along Main Street also assisted with the project by agreeing to water and upkeep the newly installed plants and plots of greenery.
