Depression Screening will be offered to SMU students and employees from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7, which is designated as the 2010 National Depression Screening Day. The location for the screening is the Wellness Center, Room 9, Toner Student Center.

Winona State University's Nick Ruiz was awarded the Paul Wellstone Legacy Award from the Minnesota School Counselors Association (MSCA)
Winona State University Professor Emeritus Nick Ruiz was awarded the Paul Wellstone Legacy Award from the Minnesota School Counselors Association (MSCA).
The Paul Wellstone Legacy award is the most prestigious award given by the MSCA. It is awarded to an individual or organization that engages in high standards of public service.

Winona State University will present a two-part workshop entitled “Stress Reduction and Self-Care” by Tim Hatfield, WSU professor emeritus of Counselor Education, Wednesday, June 23 and Thursday, June 24, Maxwell Hall room 106.
The first session, which is a ‘thank you’ to the community after Hatfield’s 30 years of service, will be held 7- 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 23 and is free and open to the public.

For many students, coping with losing a loved one during the holidays can be a hard task
Last year, 5.6 percent of Winona State University students who received counseling had a concern about grief, according to the WSU counseling center. Of that percentage, two-thirds had defined grief as their primary concern.
“Grief is an overwhelming emotion, and people can benefit from receiving information and having these feelings normalized,” said Eunie Alsaker, a counselor at the WSU counseling center.
