Despite the fact that someone once told me my heart points true north, I wouldn't know true north if, by some act of God, I was facing true north. This can surely be catalogued as another one of my father's greatest disappointments in life. Three out of four offspring pass the directions test. I am the flunkee. We grew up listening to, "Now, head south two miles, veer west about a half-mile past the second telephone pole, and immediately after...

I was sitting on my couch in a little condominium in Madison, Wisconsin nursing my three month old baby girl. I was watching the Today show and trying to make sense of the news break. Before I saw what I saw, I was ignorant and uninformed and a tad too into my own life. I yelled to Big Man, "Hey! Come look at this! A plane just flew into the World Trade Center!" I watched and couldn't believe the coincidence- another plane into another tower. I...

Two local men are not the typical gray-haired, robe-donning ministers, but a new generation of faith leaders: instead of sermons, Brandon Zieske and Justin Halbersma transform Bible teachings into action
It’s 6:25 a.m. on a Friday morning and the sun will not shine through the windows of Mugby Junction coffeehouse on Huff Street for another hour. Brandon Zieske arrived about 20 minutes earlier, pushing together tables and arranging chairs for more than a dozen expected participants in the side room of the empty shop—the only sign of life at this time of the day is marked by a sporadic customer stopping briefly to grab a quick...

The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Honor Guard was there to give her a tribal blanket and a feather to honor her service as a woman warrior. She had no ties whatsoever to...

It’s time for us to join those who have been trying to no avail--contact your representatives; attend a peace rally; send an e-mail; start a letter writing campaign
The headline in The Washington Post March 2, 2011 read: “Lt. Gen. John Kelly, who lost his son to war, says U.S. largely unaware of sacrifice.” No truer words have been spoken. Until recently, I could stand on one side of that statement and hang my head in shame because it’s clear he was speaking to me. On February 27, 2011, Corporal Andrew Wilfarht, cousin to my husband, and son to Jeff and Lori Wilfahrt of Rosemount, Minn.,...

Last week the Catholics and partygoers of the world recognized Carnaval – an awesome celebration of excesses before the 40 days of Lent. I considered going to Cádiz – a sparkly city by the sea where hundreds of thousands of visitors crowd the streets to play with feathers and fire. Instead I went to Prague, where travelers no doubt still flock and crowd, but where Carnaval gaiety is far less recognized.
