Saint Mary’s is inviting the public to the annual “SMU 10K” classic ski event on Sunday, Jan. 30. A classic-style citizens ski event will begin at 10 a.m., and a skate race will begin at 1 p.m.
“We’re very fortunate to have an excellent trail system here that is both scenic, as well as challenging," said Chris Kendall, vice president of student life.

Saint Mary's University plans to tackle solid waste production and help students go green
Saint Mary’s University has set an ambitious goal to reduce their solid waste production by 25% by 2011. How do they plan to accomplish this? SMU is going single stream.
“Single stream” is a term used to describe a change in recycling. Instead of separating types of recycling (paper, bottles, cardboard, etc.) into different containers, they can now be collected all together.

SMU hosts costume party and viewing of sixth Harry Potter movie
Decked out in a curly, bleach-blonde wig, large purple sunglasses, a metallic gold shirt and borrowed choir robe, Michelle Cullen spared no expense at the local Salvation Army thrift store to complete the look of the flighty Harry Potter character Luna Lovegood.
“She is very corky and eccentric, and that’s really fun to dress up as,” Cullen said.

Man killed by train raises questions about to-be underpasses
A recent accident involving the death of a 51-year-old Winona man on the unmarked Johnson Street railroad crossing in Winona has once again sparked discussions of renovating the unmarked crossings in Winona.
According to the Winona Daily News, at about 6:40 a.m. Monday morning, Bruce "Ernie" Edward Streng, 51, was attempting to cross the Canadian Pacific tracks at Johnson Street when it appears he tripped and fell.
